Designed by Philip Treacy and made of silk in what was apparently a "delicate tea rose" colour (but looked more like weak tea to me) the hat was compared with a toilet seat, an octopus and a cat flap. It certainly caused a stir at the Royal wedding, so the princess decided to donate it to charity
Clearly there are at least 40 people in the world with more money than hat sense, but their altruism has delighted the two charities who will share the proceeds equally. The 40 bidders placed 114 bids on eBay before the auction ended last night, and the hat sold for a staggering £81,100.01 ($130,706.54)! Children in Crisis and Unicef will use the money raised to provide education, healthcare and support to children who are most in need across the world
Princess Beatrice released a statement through Unicef which said "I cannot believe the amazing response to the hat. It has its own personality, and I am so happy that we have raised the most incredible amount of money and can make an even bigger change in the lives of some of the most vulnerable children across the world"
Somehow, I don't think we've heard the last of this hat......
