Wordless Wednesday - Double Happiness
You'd never guess, but I actually took this photo in Chongqing, Sichuan province in May 2008 - the day after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake rocked China, killing an estimated 68,000 people. The epicentre of the earthquake was just 215 miles away to the west. Miraculously, most of Chongqing escaped the devastation and this young Chinese couple had double reasons to celebrate - they had just got married and were posing for their wedding photographs in the old Huguang Assembly Hall. The name Chongqing means double happiness...
Wow what an amazing story.

ReplyDeleteThank you all so much for your lovely comments, and I'm so happy you all understood the significance! China is a fascinating place and I have visited a few times, but this particular trip was very difficult because of all the devastation caused by the earthquake, and I couldn't help but be struck by the poignancy of the happy couple (as well as her gorgeous gown!)
